ecological algorithms: the cutting edge architecture

Continuing my argument that the new architectural style, that will succeed "post-modernism," is oriented around ecologically integrated buildings, with styles sometimes generated from algorithms of environmental information.

Here are a few statement buildings moving away from the scattered sculpture of postmodernism. Many are also among the tallest:

Menara Mesiniaga, Subang Jaya (Malaysia)
Ken Yeang

-bioclimatic techniques, including daring "vertical landscaping", external louvers to reduce solar heat gain, extensive natural ventilation and lighting, and an "active Intelligent Building" system for automated energy savings.

Pearl River Tower, Guangzhou
Gordon Gill (SOM)

the shape is carefully solar oriented (towards the southeast), passive dehumidification driven by exhaust air, a geothermal heat sink pre-cools water for a cooling tower, and the shape of the building is informed by wind energy capture (from the prevailing southern winds), the curviliear shape accelerates the wind into four inlets. SOM predicts the turbines will produce nearly 15 times more electricity than a typical stand-alone wind generator.

Lighthouse Tower, Dubai
Atkins
has three large wind turbines (675 kW capacity in total), with freedom to "yawn", solar panels
and skygardens

65% forecasted reduction in energy use, 40% in water use
lobby will house an environmental visitor center

Moscow City Wedding Tower
-has the shape of DNA

Chicago Spire
Santiago Calatrava
- the structure is inspired the the smoke spiral coming from a native american's fire.
- the pinnacle is reminsicent of the graceful rotation forms of a snail's spiral

Iris Bay, Dubai
- shaped like iris, with solar orientation
